Farewell Letter

Church Family,

Next month will be 20 years that I have been serving at Friendship. There are so many things that we have accomplished together that we can be proud of. We have transitioned to a more relaxed, contemporary style of worship. We have a church that is known for making the Bible relevant and practical to everyday life. We have thriving children’s and youth ministries and we have expanded our ministry impact in our community. We have also seen hundreds of children, teens, and adults become followers of Jesus and get baptized over the 20 years. But most importantly, we have come to the realization that what we do here isn’t about us. It’s about those who are not here. Those who aren’t followers of Jesus. We exist to be radically other centered.

Something else that I have also realized is that this is not about me. Friendship Church is bigger than me. It will continue without me and will thrive without me. Back in October, I announced I was leaving at the end of May to pursue other opportunities and interests.

As the months have ticked by, burnout which has led me to be overwhelmed by all that is on my plate has robbed me of my motivation to lead the church. I now believe it has become counterproductive for me to fulfill my desire to make it to the end of May. With me struggling with this feeling of burnout and emptiness, I feel it isn’t fair to the church or myself to continue until May. I wish I could have delivered this message to you personally, but right now I am overwhelmed by my feelings and I am unable to deliver it in person without getting too emotional. Having been here almost 20 years, I have a tremendous love for this church and for each one of you. Thank you for 20 incredible years. Tarsha and I thank God that He has allowed us to be a part of what He is doing at Friendship!

With Christ’s Love,

Matt Galloway
